Ballet du Capitole Trio
Ballet du Capitole Trio

Davit Galstyan (Le Corsaire (Le Corsaire)); Maria Gutierrez (La Belle Esclave (Le Corsaire)); Julie Loria (The Beauty (La Bête et la Belle)); Takafumi Watanabe (The Beast (La Bête et la Belle)); Artjom Maksakov (Roi Ferrante (La Reine Morte)); Maria Gutierrez (Dona Ines De Castro (La Reine Morte))

Three masterworks by Kader Belarbi shine in these stunning Ballet du Capitole productions. Hailed by Le Figaro as ‘simply magnificent: a miracle in two acts’, Le Corsaire is a bold reinvention of a 19th-century classic. La Bête et la Belle – a compelling reimagining of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast – had its place affirmed among the best of modern ballets by Belarbi’s much-lauded production for Théâtre du Capitole. La Reine morte, based on Montherlant’s play of the same name and set to an enchanting score by Tchaikovsky, tells the tragic story of King Peter I of Portugal’s devotion to his beloved Inês. Filmed in High Definition and recorded in true Surround Sound.

"The Ballet du Capitole’s new production of Le Corsaire represents dance making at a very high level. There is an artistic collaboration at work here that has paid huge dividends, choreographically, musically and scenically.

David Coleman has done an admirable job of re-orchestrating what, in the wrong hands, could have been something of a hotch-potch, given that themes from Adolphe Adam’s original score are intercut with additions by Massenet, Arenski and Sibelius.

Belarbi has succeeded in capturing the essence of a nineteenth century ballet and in breathing new life into it ... The production is a marvelous distillation of expert collaborative ideas." (Auditorium - Le Corsaire)

"... for anyone whose main priority is to have a "Le Corsaire for the modern age” – and anyone wanting to watch expertly and beautifully filmed performances by a very accomplished company of dancers - this innovative account from Toulouse could hardly be bettered." (Musicweb International - Le Corsaire)

"… all the markings of one of the classic ballets: It had romance, spectacle and drama, and it was beautiful. La Bête et la Belle (The Beast and the Beauty), created by Kader Belarbi of the Paris Opera Ballet, offered a more overtly psychological view of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale than the famous Jean Cocteau or the more concrete Disney films…
The music was gorgeous and striking throughout. In addition to Ligeti's Horn Trio, the Hungarian contemporary composer's Violin Concerto and Cello Concerto were used with powerfully haunting effect. Contrasting Ligeti's austere scores were the warmth of Haydn and D'Aquin, and the colors of Ravel. Arranged by Philippe Hersant, the music was very effective in setting these psychological scenes…
The Beast and the Beauty is filled with spectacular dancing by large ensembles set beautifully. Imaginative and colorful sets and costumes by Valérie Berman and effective lighting by Marc Parent completed the visual spectacle…" (Times Argus - La Bête et la Belle)

"Set skilfully to various Tchaikovsky extracts, Kader Belarbi's ballet recreates a tragic and even bizarre episode of 14th century Portuguese history. Strikingly set and accessibly choreographed, the ballet offers a succession of striking visual images. The Toulouse company's performance, expertly captured in this recording, could hardly be bettered. " (Musicweb International - Critic's choices for Pick of 2016 - La Reine Morte)
